Artist statement:
To be a Black person in America is to know that your existence is the evidence of the ability to not only survive, but thrive, and from that, I find great comfort. Black joy is the raw, uncensored, and pure emotion of a Black person living their unapologetic truth through whatever medium seems to fit. It is the boisterous sound of laughter ringing through the backyard of a Sunday night cookout or eagerly turning around to look in the mirror in amazement when your black hair stylist utters your favorite four words, “Do you like it?”. It is the surreal feeling of walking into your grandmother’s church, smiling ear to ear because you were up all night giggling with your cousins. To have Black joy is to find pockets of happiness amid oppression and appreciate the quotidian details of the black experience.
As a Black woman and an artist, I have found that the easiest way to create a piece I am proud of is to find myself within it. More often than not, this idea leads me to create pieces inspired by what brings me feelings of peace, happiness, nostalgia, and joy. While my main medium is textile and clothing, this idea transcends past just a fun shirt, it is a way to express your identity, culture, and beliefs through wearable art. With a flair for blending whimsical storytelling with bold designs, I aspire to bring garments from concept to creation to celebrate individuality, spark conversations about one's beliefs, and ignite feelings surrounding joy and wonder. Inspired by the magic of the mundane, childhood nostalgia, and my rich heritage, I aim to create playful yet purposeful pieces merging my larger-than-life ideas with a structured silhouette. I hope that by observing my art for just one minute, the viewer will feel a similar sense of pure joy that I felt when creating the piece.
