Description

Artist statement:
These articles of clothing have red tulips, the symbol of Parkinson’s Disease printed on using cyanotype process. Each article of clothing has different stitches using red embroidery. The different sizes and styles of clothes and embroidery patterns are all meant to signify how although all the patients suffer from Parkinson’s Disease, they are all very different. They all have their own style, they’re own hobbies, they’re own life. Parkinson’s Disease cannot take that from them.

Medical condition description:
Signs and symptoms of Parkinson’s disease include tremors, especially in the hands and fingers; rigidity or stiffness in the limbs; bradykinesia or slowness of movement; and postural instability which can affect gait and balance, and lead to falls. These signs/symptoms can affect the patient’s speech, writing, and facial expressions. It is important to educate the patient that there is no cure for this disease but the main focus is to manage symptoms. This can be done through lifestyle changes like eating a healthy diet, staying active, and quit smoking. It is important the patient understands the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease & how they affect their ADL’s to make proper safety accommodations in their home like placing handrails to prevent falls or eating moist food to prevent choking hazard. Common medications for Parkinson disease are Levodopa, Eldepryl, & Dopamine Agonists. (UFHealth, 2023) (Wolters Kluwer, 2024).
