Artist statement:
Oftentimes breast cancer patients experience hair loss, or go through the process of a mastectomy. Depicted in the artwork is a woman who went through both of these things. Within our societal standards, women are typically made to feel self conscious about both of these things, and I wanted to depict someone who had both of these things and is choosing to be proud of it.

Medical condition description:
Breast cancer is a tumor that is formed within the breast tissue. It is one of the most common cancers in women worldwide, with different staging and various subtypes of breast cancer. There are many different ways for one to treat their breast cancer such, chemotherapy, radiation, or mastectomy. With our art work we portrayed a woman who has gone through the course of treatment with a mastectomy. With a diagnosis of breast cancer and treatment course of a mastectomy it can leave one sullen. However, some individuals would be proud that they have survived like in the painting.
