Artist statement:
In this video, titled “Ask About Hypothyroidism”, I chose to animate a scene that portrays the signs and symptoms that people may typically experience if they have Hypothyroidism. The woman portrayed in the video is seen in a doctor’s office, while experiencing symptoms such as excessive weight gain, joint pain, and trouble tolerating low temperatures. I wanted to portray this scene in a more visually appealing and uplifting way, as opposed to the melancholic mood of your typical medical infomercial. While this video shows just the basic signs, there are other symptoms that may present themselves. It is important to talk to a medical professional or a doctor if you are experiencing any of the signs or symptoms that are displayed in the video so that you can get the treatment you need.

Medical description:
Hypothyroidism is a condition, commonly referred to as an underactive thyroid, that can be explained by a hormonal imbalance that causes inadequate production of thyroid hormones, T3 & T4, despite the secretion of TSH by the pituitary gland. While it is commonly due to autoimmune conditions, it may also be caused by surgery or radiation. Signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism consist of cold intolerance, weight gain, constipation, bradycardia, muscle aches, and the thinning of the skin, hair, and nails. Patient responses vary from anxiety of knowledge deficit to happiness for confirmation of signs and symptoms. Despite the patient's response, it is important to assess the patient's understanding of their condition as this may affect therapy compliance. For these patients, we want to stress consistent medication use for lifelong hypothyroidism management (Al Kindi et al., 2023). Lifestyle modifications and regular symptom monitoring in follow-up appointments are also vital (AlAwaji & Alhamwy, 2023).
