[Letter has a cartoon at the top of a group of paratroopers jumping from a plane. A female paratrooper in front is saying "I SURE WISH THE GIRLS BACK HOME COULD SEE ME NOW--BACK HOME!]
Sept. 9, 1943
Dear People:
First of all, Ed, do you have the certificate of title? I don't, or at least can't find it. If you do, send it to Dad after signing it in the right place.
It surely is swell having a car again, and it runs just perfect. So far I'm using the en-route gas but hope to get my own book before long--when I get the title to apply for it.
Well, I'm still waiting around for my instrument test. It's supposed to be just a Basic test (no radio) but my instructor says that I'm liable to get both cause I'm good enough and so finish up right away. Either way will be fine with me because one way I'll get more hood time, and the other I'll get back onto trips sooner. Helen Richards got into the school yesterday.
Ed, Betsy Ferguson is coming up to Colo. Sprs. for a two weeks sick leave soon. She got appendicitis on board an airliner and had to go to the hospital for a while. She's really run down. I gave her your address, she might look you up, and also she might like to get in some link time.
Betsy, Helen and I are on the outs with Florene and Delphine. Yesterday Betsy found out she was thrown out of her top job and D. put in so she raised a howl. She had me there to listen in and so of course the whole deal blew up. Some bad words were flying around. I tried staying on the listening side only but too many sore spots were raised and soon I was talking some too. What will come of it all I'm not sure but I'm not in any worse light than before--maybe. Anyway I'm sure of not getting a staff job, which is good cause I'll get more flying and less politics.
(just noticed Dad said "registration Certificate[sic]" same deal--I have no car papers, nor can prove ownership)
Dad, I'm all moved out of Zimmy's, and all moved in the barracks--it's nicer too, real convenient.
[Page 2]
Don, There's[sic] some good chances that I can get down your way in an AT6 some time because a lot go to Victoria and I can get lost 25 miles worth easy. It's funny how things work out. If I hadn't gone into instrument school I'd have gotten to take some A24s to Camp Da vis.[sic] Several of the girls have gone there with them. By the time I get one there now, you'll be gone.
Don, thanks for the pictures, they aren't bad at all.
Now I gotta go take that flight test---
by[sic]--
Well, I just finished my test. Whew, that is absolutely the hardest work in the world; first flying, then under-the-hood air work, and last, a test. I didn't do so good I thought, but I got a Fair on it so I pass o.k.
My air work isn't so good as my radio work, so the next test will be easier. [handwritten in pencil--no radio this test]
I went to lunch at the mess and who did I see but Jacqueline Cochran. First time I'd seen her. She was eating with the C.O. so I didn't meet her but I will la ter[sic] today as she's coming here to the barracks.
Personally, I'm glad I don't "rate" too high around here as it's too much work mixing flying and politics. If they let me fly, I'll not quibble over becoming a "leader". Anyway, if we were elected by the kids I'd sure outra te[sic] our topkicks so that's consoling.
by[sic] again--
Dorothy[handwritten in pencil]
