Sunday nite[sic], 9-19-43
Dear Dad:
It seems the more I write to you the more I have to to[sic] keep you informed. I believe the last was mailed while in Pittsburg or someplace.
I'm back home now and found a couple of your letters waiting which need answering. But first I'll conclude the trip. We got into Newark with no more trouble and had four hours to kill. Jane had never been in N.Y. before, and it being an exceptionally clear day, we went to the top of Rockefeller Center again and looked around. Then we wore ourselves out pounding pavement and going thru Grand Central Station so we slept pretty well on the way home.
We were stopped a while at Memphis by bad weather--but definitely. finally[sic] we took off and were on instruments immediately. We flew over-the-top all the way to Dallas and it was so interesting to see the cloud formations that I did no more sleeping.
Back here I checked in and got back into instrument school. (now for a secret[underlined] for you) I went to see Capt. Wright who is head of it and we talked a while, and guess what-----he wants me to instruct on instruments for him !! This isn't sure yet because he has to see the powers-that-be to get their o.k., but it shows that I must rate with him. It'll be a good deal for me besides instilling my hood knowledge a bit more, because it will give me a good reputation on the post that I can sure use.
(next day) I flew instruments in the AT11 today and did o.k. we landed and found the army news reel service shooting some pictures of the girls coming out of the TARFU plane and into the AT11's (ours, the bums) so we watched awhile. first thing you know they had me doing a solo number for them in the PQ8--the little target ship. I just got into my [handwritten in pencil--chute] climbed into the thing and started it and taxiid for a ways. So now I'm in the movies. it will be sent overseas and then released here. [handwritten in pencil (maybe)]
Also the Oct. National Geographic has a Women-In-Uniform article and a short note about the WASPS--and I'm quoted. You see, I took a writer around way last February for her material--and it was raining.
Now for your questions--We got back from Ballinger in a TARFU plane sent there after us--they pick up close pilots if there are more than six. I used the mosquito netting for a week--then we got screens, oh boy. tho[sic] now it's too cold for them.
[Page 2]
You asked my opinion about the income tax. we[sic] found out about that and we ra te[sic] as just civil service employees in that regard. we[sic] are sort of in-betweeners and get some of the good and some of the bad on both sides. Here's mu check for my tax, whew, it's steep, isn't it!
However, dad, it wouldn't do any harm to send the letter as he will call it to mind when and if our being taken into the army comes up. He'll have a more personal slant on the thing. I like the letter very much as it isn't demanding, only asking. Then too, we might get a break on the deal.
Your comment on Dick Burnam only makes me think how much I'll not care if I never see him--he's strictly no good.
I just called a Ford Agency and they said none had the distributor part you mentioned, so I tried the Western Auto Supply Wholesale and they are out and also all their branches in town, so I can't help you I'm afraid.
The apples haven't come as yet, but freight is very slow these days. Also I can't use anymore airplane pictures right now as I have several on my walls now.
That was sure too bad about the Pullman airport. We [handwritten in pencil--knew] Elmer Erickson but none of the other mentioned. I hear from Bruce Coombs occassionally[sic] but he's in the CAA at Butte Mont. (I think it's Butte)
Lila May has written and I shall answer it soon. She's going back to school soon. Her letter was all about the gang, all very domesticated.
This is enough for one letter.
bye---
