Dear Dad:
I returned to Dallas on a C47 on the night of the 14th. The time in Lubbock was most profitably spent riding in the gliders and the tow planes. I had a whale of a good time and had to rest too because of ground fog each morning.
Back here I found a lot of things cooking, some pretaining[sic] to me. First, my report of observing glider towing which I have just finished writing. It seems they are considering using girls for tow pilots in planes no one approves of.
Thank goodness I have enough material to put up a good stiff argument against the use of the A25 as a tow plane. If we can use C60's or C47's it will be different. I don't think girls should tow on cross-country's anyway.
Back here I discover I am to be sent to Palm Sprins[sic] pursuit school for a month starting December 1. This presents a whole lot of possibilities. Now hang on to your hat because I am going to ask mother if she wants to come out for that period. It will do her a lot of good and me too. You see, I won't stay with her, but will stay on post and see her only occasionally. You will no doubt disapprove on the grounds that she will worry me, but the reverse is true, since I can see her only when I want to and she is a big help in so many little ways that add up to a lot....anything from sewing to sympathy.
Now for your part in this. You could easily be in Palm springs too without straining the family ties too much, yet I don't quite feel that you could stay there contentedly considering houw[sic] erratic
[Page 2]
my time allotements[sic] would be. Again, though I hate to say it, and you will say it ain't so, I do more worrying about you and what you could do to yourself all that time. I'll be doing too much concentrated flying to do more than fall flat each nite.
Right now I'm headed for that last C47 time as soon as a plane is available. That will give me my class 3p rating I need to go to Palm Springs; then I'm going to try to fly the A24 and check on the A25 and get trips on them so as to get the single-engine heavy time I can use in pursuit school. if I get my way, I'll get trips west and stop at El Paso. Anyway, here I am with two weeks and lots of things to do in that time.
Meanwhile here I am in up to my ears in our troubles here. Four WASPS had forced landings all due to the carburetor ice in the PQ8's, one of whom smashed her plane and broke her nose. Also our other troubles have magnified and gained momentum so that we all are treading on thin ice and may get some fast deflating.
You are probably wondering whether or not to come back here now. I shall likely be here a few days but of course can't be sure. Everything is in such a muddle I shant know what I'm doing one minute to the next.
Wire when you are coming so that I can meet you.
Hi! Don, don't forget the three RRRRRRrrrrrrs---
Dorothy
[written in pencil at the end]
Dad: I think it would be a good idea for you to drive out with me if you possibly can. This would be about Dec 1 or earlier.
Perhaps I'll just be given enough time for me to drive out so you could take my car which I'll need then.
