We both led such a life for many years, and know what a toll it takes in productivity and happiness. We believe our people can be helped even by realizing that the ACLU locally would support their minority. Many of them will be too afraid to attend even with such co-sponsorship, but just the opportunity will help take away a bit of the fear. And for those who do consider attending, the legitimacy such co-sponsorship would lend would help tremendously. Whether or not such people ever actively participate in any human rights activities, the chance to mingle with others who are doing so, and who indeed consider that gays have a right to rights, would be invaluable.
Of course your co-sponsorship would also make it clear to the hetersexual population that this is a respectable and worthy cause.
We are enclosing an information sheet about GLAD and will be happy to answer any questions you may have about our organization and its goals, or about the party. Also enclosed is a flier for the course we co-sponsored this winter, with some local citizens checked who have worked with us on it and on other matters and can vouch for us.
GLAD will make all the arrangements for the party and take care of the expenses. We hope it will be a money-making event, for we have a number of educational projects we would like to undertake if funds were available. We would be willing to share some of the profit with you, but rather feel that GLAD and NGFT (which is paying for Ms. Valeska’s trip to the area) should have a larger share because we are doing the work–and we really need it badly! Perhaps we can discuss this aspect of the party personally.
We will call you later in the week to see if you would like to talk further, and about when your Board could consider the subject. Time is rather short, for we would like to mail invitations before June 10, and need to have them into the printer nearly ten days before that.
Sincerely,
James T.F. Tanner
