This Week in Texas
[redacted]
Attention Chuck Patrick
Dear TWT:
Recently This Week in Texas carried a news story on the November Board Meeting of the Lesbian/Gay Democtrats of Texas held in El Paso. as Co-Chair LGDT, I would like to amend and correct the story you carried.
In the fall of 1986, LGDT received its first real recognition as a group from the Texas Democratic Party when Chairman Bob Slagle arranged for his office to set up appointments for LGDT representatives to meet and talk about our issues with every Democrat in the Texas Legislature, and to give them materials about gays and lesbians. Former Board Member Tom Cain and myself spent several weeks in Austin (at our own expense) during the special session talking to people from areas with no organized gay groups. After the special session, we were told by party people to wait till after the election to talk to the rest of the legislators. These were largely from those cities with gay organizations, who were to be approached at home by their local people.
At the El Paso meeting, the Board initially voted to abandon this program. I did not want to be associated with such a move because it would look so bad to the Party officials; nor could I lead a group which would drop a worthy program it had been enthusiastic about during two previous Board meetings.
